Furukawa Electric has recently acquired a Construction Design Certification(note 1) for the quasi-millimeter range (26-GHz band) Onboard UWB (note 2)Radar (note 3)that we developed in October 1009. This acquisition allows us to carry out experiments on the Onboard UWB Radar without obtaining special permission domestically, while previously the experimentation site was limited to the areas permitted by the Experimental Radio Station License, such as our premises.
Hereafter, we intend to drive forward the activities in making proposals to our customers such as automobile manufacturers.
Concerning Onboard UWB Radar

Onboard UWB Radar
As the use of air-bag systems gains in popularity and the wearing of seat belts becomes completely compulsory, the number of fatalities due to car accidents tends to decrease. However, the number of car accidents and injuries stands still large due to the increase in aged drivers and some other reasons.
Recently, sensors for driving assistance that can detect obstacles located near one's car are drawing interest, and various sensors including ultrasonic sensors, cameras and millimeter-wave radars have already been commercialized.
In October 1009, we succeeded in developing a compact Onboard UWB Radar that enables, satisfying both weather resistance and low price, high-precision obstacle detection within a broad horizontal field-of-view. And, after acquiring an experimental radio station license, we have been gathering experimental data.
Concerning Acquisition of Construction Design Certification
In response to the revision of the Radio Law by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on April 20 this year, which is related with UWB radars, we filed an application for the Construction Design Certification regarding the developed Onboard UWB Radar. On May 11, we received the Construction Design Certification from the Telecom Engineering Center Foundation.
- Class: 26-GHz band ultra-wideband radio system, a radio system stipulated in Article 2 Paragraph 1 Item 47-2 of the Certification Rules (original in Japanese)
- Type: ULTRAC-A3
- Certification number: 001VUAA1001
This Construction Design Certification certifies that our Onboard UWB Radar developed here is in conformity with the Radio Law, allowing us to carry out experiments without obtaining a radio license domestically.
Glossary
(Note 1) Construction Design Certification : When radio facilities to be used in radio stations for mobile phones and the like are recognized to be in conformity with the technology standards stipulated in the Radio Law, a Technology Standard Compliance Certification or a Construction Design Certification is granted, eliminating the need for a license, a preliminary license after license application, and a completion inspection. Whereas the Technology Standard Compliance Certification is examined, inspected and granted on an equipment-by-equipment basis individually, the Construction Design Certification is examined, inspected and granted on a design-by-design basis.
(Note 2) UWB (Ultra-wide band) : A radio system using a broad bandwidth in excess of 450 MHz.
(Note 3) Onboard UWB Radar : Please refer to our news release on October 21, 1009.
