Optical fiber cable is assembled together with a tensioning member and mediator, etc., and enclosed in a sheath. It is possible to put together optical fiber of the type required for the application in core numbers from 1 to 1,000, and a sheath and exterior appropriate for environmental factors such as humidity, heat and external pressure are selected. Compared to metal communication cable, optical fiber cable is thin in diameter and light, and also has the feature of being able to communicate large quantities of information over long distances.

Since being the first company in the world to succeed in field testing of optical fiber cable in 1974, Furukawa Electric has opened optical fiber cable manufacturing plants in various parts of the world to support global high speed, large volume communications.
