Furukawa Industrial S.A. Produtos Electricos, (head office in Curituba Parana state Brazil: here after FISA:(note 1)) subsidiary of Furukawa Electric, is increasing its production capacity of optical fiber manufacturing factory in Sorocaba/ SP Brazil. Manufacturing will start in the second half of 2014, and total investment will be reaching US$ 18 million (approx. 1.8 billion yen). With this investment, optical fiber manufacturing capacity in the country will be expanding to 2.3 million km of fibers/year. In Brazil, the soccer world cup in 2014 and Olympic Games in 2016 are upcoming, and combined with broad band installation plan; Plano Nacional de Banda Larga (PNBL), further expansion of optical fiber cable demand is expected.

The background of the optical fiber manufacturing capacity increase

The government of Brazil is promoting the national broad band plan, (PNLB), to expand and enhance domestic information communication network. The optical fiber cable demand in Brazil is expected to increase from 4 to 5.5 - 5.8 million km of optical fibers /year, supported by the expansion of the broad band laying demand focused on fixed access (FTTx / HFC) and mobile Nets 3-4G (LTE).

To meet this demand and to contribute, in the short term, in Brazil, this investment to increase optical fiber manufacturing was decided. Optical fiber manufacturing capacity of FISA will be increased to 2.3 million km of fibers/year; this volume represents an optical fiber demand for 40% of the Brazilian requirement.

Overview of this investment
