Segment Information

Light Metals

Results of operations in fiscal 2011

The Light Metals segment enjoyed an increase in the number of products sold across a wide range of fields, including beverage cans that benefited from the exceptional summer heat in the first half of the fiscal year, materials for automotive cooling units, and thick plates used for liquid crystal and semiconductor fabrication. In the second half, demand for some products began to fall, although a recovery in the materials for automotive cooling units, an increase in foil materials, and other factors resulted in sales growth, and consolidated sales of this segment increased 11.1% year on year, to 209 billion yen. Consolidated operating income increased considerably, rising 11.6 billion yen year on year, to 11.5 billion yen, helped by greater stability in prices of aluminum metal compared to the previous year, in addition to the recovery in sales volumes noted earlier.
