Optical fiber is a type of cables media which is used for communications, and is a cable which converts data into optical signals and transmits them. The speed of data transmission and the amount of transmittable data at a time is highly superior to the existing copper cables.
Since FURUKAWA ELECTRIC succeeded in manufacturing world's first optical fiber cable in 1974, it is contributing its energy to research & development and manufacturing as the leading company of optical fibers.

- By reacting optical fiber materials in flame, soot, which is a mass of glass powder, is synthesized. The central part “core”, which light run through and the outer side “clad” are generated simultaneously.

- Transparent core glasses are made inside a vitrification reactor. Going through stretching and jacketing, they become optical fiber preforms.

- The apical ends of the preforms are heated and resolved inside a wiredrawing reactor at more than 2000 C, thereby they are stretched to 125 micrometers (about the width of hair). By rolling up these fused glasses continuously, glass fibers are made. And by fibering and resin coating simultaneously, they become optical fiber core wires which delicate glass surfaces are protected.

- Optical fiber tape core wires are completed by laying out colored core wires precisely at an identical pitch.

- Those are bound up in a single cable. Necessary numbers of optical fiber core wires are set in slots which are made around a steel wire. To protect it, presser rolling is done with strings and tapes, etc.

- The cable core is coated with plastic sheath. Coating is done by optimal materials and methods according to the purposes.
