Recycled electric wires

Whereas cross-linking (Note 1) improves heat-resistance and mechanical strength as well as electrical properties of polyethylene, it was impracticable to reuse waste electric wires again as an electric wire material because cross-linked polyethylene was impossible to be processed by extrusion. Through the thermo-plasticization technology Furukawa Electric has developed, it has now become possible to reuse cross-linked polyethylene as an electric wire material. Outdoor cross-linked polyethylene insulated (OC) wires using recycled cross-linked polyethylene is building its track record of delivery.

Features

We have been successful, for the first time in the world, in thermo-plasticizing the waste of cross-linked polyethylene, by applying suitable heat and shearing force to break down the cross-linked structure thus achieving low-molecular weight. This has paved the way to reuse waste cross-linked polyethylene as an electric wire insulation material.

(Note 1) Cross-linking:To link together part of chain-structured molecules with each other, to obtain a three-dimensional mesh structure. The resulting ultra-high molecular weight improves heat resistance and creep property.
