Fire Protection Kit for Cable Penetrations "Ichijikan-PK25 Kit" Launched

December 22, 2006

The Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., and Furukawa Techno Material Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Hiratsuka-shi, Kanagawa-ken; President: Nobuyuki Nakamura; Capital: 300 million yen, 100% funded by Furukawa Electric) have jointly developed a fire protection kit for wire and cable compartment penetrations "Ichijikan-PK25 Kit," and launched the product on December 20, 2006.
This product has acquired, from the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, accreditation PS060WL-0274 applicable to hollow plasterboard walls that constitute fire control compartments in buildings, and will be launched, combined with the accreditation PS060FL-0223 that has already been acquired, as a kit applicable to both walls and floors. This will reduce the total cost of material and work by about 40% compared with the conventional method. The sales amount for fiscal 2007 is targeted at 100 million yen per year.

Background of Development

The Building Standard Law of Japan requires that all cabling and piping systems should be provided with fire spread prevention measures having a predetermined performance level to achieve a fire resistance period of one hour maximum, when they penetrates walls and floors that constitute fire control compartments of buildings.
Conventional fire control measures use fireproof boards made of calcium silicate and the like as a shuttering board for cable routes, and fill the opening between the cable and board using fireproof sealing materials. But this method poses the problems as described below.

  1. Although hollow plasterboards are broadly used in most buildings recently, there have been no fireproof work procedures applicable to such boards.
  2. Work contractors usually purchase a large-sized fireproof board, and cut out at the site a required portion fit to the actual size of the opening, letting the scrap pieces go to waste and generating the waste disposal costs.
  3. When both walls and floors are to be worked simultaneously, material order placements and work procedures are likely to go wrong, since they use different materials and techniques.

To solve these problems, we have standardized the testing method for hollow walls, and brought into the market a convenient kit product. The product contains the required volume of the required material in a package, and is applicable to either hollow walls, concrete walls or floors with steel sleeves. Use of this product can reduce disposal costs of scrap pieces and waste, and at the same time can eliminate erroneous material order placements and work procedures, thereby achieving process simplification and work period reduction of field works together with cost reduction and work quality improvement.

Features of the Product

  1. Applicable to hollow plasterboard walls
Having acquired the accreditation PS060WL-0274 to cope with hollow plasterboard walls that are broadly used recently, this product is applicable to all the fireproof walls that are accredited from the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation.
  2. All the necessary materials are contained in a package
The product comes in ten varieties corresponding to the size of the penetration openings to be worked, and all the necessary materials for one penetration are contained in a single package. Thus, generation of scrap pieces and waste is curtailed, making this product environment friendly.
  3. A kit product applicable to both walls and floors
The same kit product can be used to both walls and floors equipped with a steel sleeve, eliminating the bothersome selection of materials and work procedures for the user.
  4. Single-sided work is possible
For the first time in the fireproof board work procedures applicable to hollow walls, the product permits finishing the work by installing the fireproof board only from the one side of a wall.
  5. Lower costs than the conventional
With its acquired accreditation for wall processing, this product enables reductions in materials used and simplification of work procedures than the conventional methods, thereby achieving a 40% reduction in the material and work costs.
