In the environmental screening for the “Loans for Promoting Environmentally Conscious Management”, the loan program implemented by the Development Bank of Japan, Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. received recognition for its environmentally conscious corporate management, and acquired the rating of “a company with environmentally-conscious activities which are recognized as being particularly advanced” today, December 28th.This is the highest rank, and Furukawa Electric is the first to acquire this rating in the electric wire and cable industry.
Content of the environmental rating screening
The Development Bank of Japan’s Loans for Promoting Environmentally Conscious Management is the world’s first loans program to implement the specialized method of “environmental ratings”.With a screening system (rating system) developed by the Development Bank of Japan, exceptional companies are selected by giving a score for the company’s level of environmental management and setting the applicable interest rate from three levels based on this score.
Why our company was able to acquire this rating
The slogan for Furukawa Electric’s philosophy on environmental activities is “an earth-friendly company”, and we have put into practice balanced environmental management across all three elements of management, operations, and performance.
Specifically, we have established our own collection network and recycling system
as measures to effectively use resources, and we are recycling 100% of copper conductors.Further, for optical fiber cables that had traditionally been disposed of as landfill waste, the insulation materials were reused to successfully make duct guards into a product.By promoting these recycling activities, we have reduced the amount of direct landfill waste disposal by 94% in fiscal 2005 compared to fiscal 2000, and are promoting efforts towards realizing a recycling-oriented society.In terms of global-warming measures, we have switched from diesel generators to hydraulic power generation and natural gas, promoting the changeover to earth-friendly energy.We have also reduced the total amount of CO2 emissions.These were all highly regarded.
As a result, Furukawa Electric was the first company in the electric wire and cable industry to acquire the highest ranked rating of “a company with environmentally-conscious activities which are recognized as being particularly advanced”.In the future, we will continue to actively engage in efforts for the environment and for society as “an earth-friendly company”.
In December 2006, our company received an environmental rating loan from the Development Bank of Japan, and the resulting rating was as “a company with environmentally-conscious activities which are recognized as being particularly advanced”.
