The Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (hereinafter called Furukawa Electric) launched the sales of “ID-L Handy Light Source” as a successor model to the light source for optical fiber identifier “ID-L/DA”.
The new light source has, keeping the design and size of the conventional model of good repute unchanged, installed a boost function to increase the optical output by about 10 dB than usual. Moreover, whereas only a single output wavelength of 1550 nm has been available with the conventional model, the new light source allows for selection of additional wavelengths of either 1310, 1490 or 1610 nm.
Taking advantage of its technology and cost competitiveness with which Furukawa Electric is enjoying a market share of 80 % in lasers for relaying communications, the Company has achieved a low price of 130 thousand yen for the new model leaving the conventional price unchanged.
We intend to expand our sales further through the launch of this product.
Developmental Background
Recently, as communication systems become diversified including GE-PON and the like, various optical wavelengths are used for communication, requiring a broad lineup of light source wavelengths used in the measurements of insertion loss and reflection attenuation.
To cover such a broad range of measurement scenes, Furukawa Electric now introduces, based on the conventional light source ID-L/DA for optical fiber identifiers, the new model which offers an upgraded wavelength lineup together with compact size and low price.
Moreover, the boost function provided with this model increases the leaky light for identification by 10 dB, thereby improving the identification capability for nylon coated optical fibers which have been found to be difficult to be identified using conventional identifiers. When used in conjunction with the high-sensitivity optical fiber identifier ID-H/R which was launched in December 2007, this product will bring about a much improved fiber identification capability.
