OFS and Furukawa Announce Volume Production of HPU 42000 Series Raman Amplifiers with Automatic Gain Cintrol
~ Automatic Control Facilitates the Introduction of Systems Communications ~

March 2, 2012

OFC/ NFOEC 2012, Booth 2125, Los Angeles, California, March 5, 2012 - Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., and the U.S. based OFS, Specialty Photonics Division, today announced volume production of their HPU 42000 series Raman amplifiers with built-in automatic gain control (AGC) function. The Raman amplifier offers ease of system implementation and excellent noise characteristics, which in combination with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) improves optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) as well as compensates for optical loss resulting from optical transmission lines and optical components. With the built-in AGC function, the output power per channel at each amplifier is kept constant by controlling the gain automatically, thus resulting in simplicity as well as better integration in transmission systems.

This product will be on display in the OFC/NFOEC 2012, the world´s largest international telecommunication conference and exhibition, which opens in Los Angeles on March 6th.

Background of commercialization

The HPU 42000 Series

Furukawa is a global leader for 1480-nm pumping lasers, a key device of fiber-optic amplifiers, and continues to bring cutting edge, high-quality products to the worldwide market as an industry leader. The company has also registered several relevant patents for Raman amplifiers in Japan and the United States.

As ultra-high bit rate optical transmission of as high as 100 Gb/s is progressively implemented in the future, the demand for Raman amplifiers with excellent noise characteristics is expected to increase significantly, because Raman amplifiers in combination with erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) can effectively improve OSNR, thus allowing longer reach and higher capacity optical networks. To fulfill market needs, Furukawa developed the Raman amplifier (HPU42000 Series) with a built-in AGC function in March 2011 and commenced its volume production in December 2011.
