Metal Research Center

Timely cooperation with manufacturing divisions

The Metal Research Center conducts comprehensive R&D related to copper alloy development and new materials as well as process development, such as melting and casting, plastic machining, and surface treatment. The center is adjacent to the manufacturing base and is able to promptly and flexibly respond to user needs. Its activities strengthen Furukawa Electric's capability to propose solutions to customers.

Message from the Manager

The history of the Metal Research Center reaches back more than 50 years. During that time, it has produced outstanding results in the development of metallic materials such as wrought copper, copper foils, aluminum, and materials for copper and aluminum wires, and has generated businesses that constitute the core of Furukawa Electric today.
Now, in the 21st century, while continuing to base its efforts on the technology platform it has established in the past, the center will move beyond copper materials to become a core research center for developing a wider range of metallic materials. The center will develop cutting-edge materials, with the priority areas of electronics, automotive, the environment and energy, toward contributing to the sustainable progress of society.
The main research themes for the Metal Research Center include the development of copper and copper alloy strips, foils, wires and pipes; nonferrous metal functional materials; and high-temperature superconductive materials. These materials require increasingly sophisticated properties that correspond with ongoing technological advances. We at the Metal Research Center will conduct R&D activities leading to potential material solutions for customers based on four infrastructure technologies-materials, processes, reliability, and analysis and evaluation technologies-under our mission to steadfastly pursue the infinite possibilities of metallic materials.
