Furukawa Electric Launches Outdoor Communications Equipment Cabinet with Temperature Control Feature
~ Jointly develops energy-saving cabinet with Nexco-East Engineering ~

February 29, 2012

Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. and Nexco-East Engineering Co. Ltd. have jointly developed and launched a temperature-regulated communications equipment cabinet. The cabinet allows the low-cost, collective installation of indoor equipment and enables the building of outdoor information stations.

Details

With the transition to IP-based communication networks on expressways, there has been an increasing demand for the installation of IP-based equipment such as road information boards, weather monitors and traffic volume measurement equipment on roads. To this end, Furukawa Electric and Nexco-East Engineering have jointly developed and launched a temperature-regulated communications equipment cabinet. Along with an energy-saving design, the cabinet allows the low-cost, collective installation of indoor equipment and enables the building of outdoor information stations.

The product is designed for the storage of equipment up to a gross heat generation of 320W in the cabinet, and could house fiber optic and cable-linked IP-based transmission equipment, servers, power supplies and UPS units and so on. In external environments such as the hot direct sunlight of the summer months or winter temperatures in cold regions ranging from -15 to 45℃, the temperatures of between 0 to 35℃ can be maintained inside the chassis. The temperature control systems, which utilize Furukawa Electric´s strengths in heat dissipation and cooling technologies such as Peltier devices, crimped fins and temperature control algorithms, were shown to be capable of adequately cooling communications equipment housed inside, even in field tests conducted during the summer. Moreover, since the design avoids the use of mechanical chillers or similar equipment, as well as adopting a compact shape measuring 700mm x 850 mm x 1,300 mm (W x D x H), it features high reliability and maintainability. Further, with the automatic switching of dual heat exchangers, in monetary terms the energy savings are equivalent to more than 100,000 yen per year, compared with conventional electric cooling systems.

Looking ahead, Furukawa Electric plans to capitalize on its accomplishments, developing a communications equipment cabinet with industry-leading temperature control capacity of up to 320W to further expand and improve its product lineup.
