Furukawa Electric Develops Thin Ultra-high Count Multi-core Optical Fiber Cable with the World’s Highest Core Density
- Product to contribute significantly toward building high-capacity networks -

March 30, 2018

Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. has developed a thin ultra-high count multi-core “rollable ribbon” optical fiber cable that boasts the world’s highest core density(note 1), for use as high-capacity optical fiber cable required in data centers and other locations. These cables are thinner and offer higher density than conventional cables, making it possible to build high-capacity networks more efficiently.

(note 1)Core density: The number of optical fibers versus the cross-section area of the cable.

Background

In response to the rapid increase in the amount of data traffic they handle, data centers and metropolitan networks are requiring optical fiber networks of even higher capacity. Although multi-core optical fiber cables are useful in building efficient high-capacity networks, the maximum number of cores is limited by the size of the installed pipe conduit.

Details

Furukawa Electric has developed a thin ultra-high count multi-core optical fiber cable that boasts the world’s highest core density. This 12-core rollable ribbon is made from optical fiber with a thinner outer diameter (200 μm), for a drastically thinner cable with an outer diameter of only 29 mm that offers extremely high density (6912 cores).
This new development makes it possible to install ultra-high count multi-core fiber in bulk in existing pipe conduits (with an internal diameter of 1.5”).

High-capacity networks will become increasingly important as 5G and the IoT develop, and Furukawa Electric will continue to help build these networks by providing the world’s best optical fiber cables.

Additional Information

Furukawa Electric plans to exhibit the new product at the 18th Fiber Optics Expo (FOE).

About Furukawa Electric Group

Furukawa Electric (TSE; 5801, ISIN; JP3827200001) Group started business in 1884, when its copper-smelting facility and wire manufacturing factory was established. Since then Furukawa Electric has become pioneers in the latest technologies by addressing diverse technological issues. Furukawa Electric has released products in a number of areas, including telecommunications, electronics, automobiles, and construction, with the three types of materials it works with at their core, namely, optics, plastics, and metals. Many of these products have attained the top global market share, and all of its products have contributed to society in numerous business areas. Furukawa Electric reported consolidated revenues of JPY 843.3 billion (approximately USD 7.8B) for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2017.
