  • Green Trough, a cable trough made using recycled polymer, acquired an EPD covering the entire European region
  • Along with its excellent weather, corrosion, and freezing resistance, the lightweight Green Trough product also contributes to reducing installation time and ensuring safety of workers
  • Helping to expand the use of Green Trough in European markets, aligning with the modal shift as part of the European Green Deal

Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (Head office: 2-6-4 Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hideya Moridaira) has acquired an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) covering the entire European region for the company’s Green Trough product made from recycled polymer. This is the first instance for a Japanese trough manufacturer to acquire an EPD in Europe.

Background

As a group, we have outlined the Furukawa Electric Group Environmental Vision 2050, and our contributions to decarbonization and realizing a water and resource recycling-based society, we are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the value chain and we promote the use of recycled materials, including waste plastic. We are expanding the Green Trough to other countries around the world in addition to Japan, and local manufacturing started in Europe in July 2023 to respond to growing demand following advances in the modal shift (shift transportation from truck to railroads, which carry a lower environmental burden) being carried out as part of the EU Green Deal.

Details

The EPD corresponds to a Type III Environmental Label under the international standard ISO14025, and our Green Trough has acquired an EPD for the entire European region, including the United Kingdom.
In the overseas construction industry, following increased consideration for the environment, the acquisition of EPD's by the project owner when submitting a bid or concluding an agreement is becoming more important. Also, including the need to present CO2 emissions calculated by a third-party institution during the design stage, acquisition of EPD’s is becoming one of the requirements for receiving orders. The current EPD acquisition follows the acquisition of an EPD in Australia in 2021. The details of the EPD can be found on the following EPD Hub website (English only).

Going forward, we will contribute to promoting the modal shift as part of the European Green Deal by continuing to expand the use of Green Trough in markets throughout Europe.
