Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (Head office: 2-6-4 Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Keiichi Kobayashi) has been selected by CDP, an international environmental NGO, for its Leader of “A” (top) rated companies in recognition of our outstanding climate change initiatives across the entire supply chain and related information disclosure. This is the fourth consecutive year that we have received this high rating. Background

To contribute toward achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and realize Furukawa Electric Group Vision 2030 (hereinafter “Vision 2030”), our Group has been working to strengthen ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) management in order to increase corporate value over the medium to long-term with ESG at the foundation. As part of these efforts, Furukawa Electric Group Environmental Vision 2050 was formulated in March 2021, and we declared our goal of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from the business activities (carbon neutral). Also, within the important management issues that should be addressed in order to achieve Vision 2030 (materiality), we have set forth “Creating environmentally-friendly businesses” under “Creating businesses that solve social issues” and “Developing business activities that consider climate change”, and we are strengthening our responses to these management issues.

Details

In recent years, the extreme weather events occurring in various parts of the world are believed to have been caused in part by the environmental impact of corporate activities, including greenhouse gas emissions. Our Group’s business activities have also been affected. In response, we are strengthening our environmental management systems throughout the business activities, including the establishment and revision of the Environmental Targets 2030. In addition, based on the details of these, we are promoting the disclosure of information, such as responding to questionnaires from CDP and publishing integrated reports and sustainability books. We have been rated highly for our grasp of greenhouse gas emission volumes, transparency, target setting and actions in our climate change measures across the entire supply chain, as well as for our proactive disclosure of information in these regards. This has resulted in our selection for the highest rating - Supplier Engagement Rating Leader - for the fourth consecutive year. To contribute toward the achievement of the SDGs and realize Vision 2030, we will continue to promote energy conservation activities at our plants and works, as well as the use of renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric power, which we have been using continuously for over a century, and solar power with the aim of eliminating our greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In addition, we will promote initiatives throughout the Group and entire value chain to achieve our greenhouse gas reduction targets, while also enhancing information disclosure and increasing our transparency, and thereby further strengthen the relationships of trust with stakeholders.
