The operational structure of the Furukawa Electric optical fiber cable business has been integrated under a new brand, Lightera, which will be launched April 1, 2025
Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. (“Furukawa Electric”) (Tokyo; President and CEO: Hideya Moridaira) has integrated its optical fiber cable operations under a new holding company, "Lightera Holding G.K." From April 1, 2025, it will operate under the brand "LighteraTM."
Background
Until now, the optical fiber cable business of Furukawa Electric has consisted of three units: the Fiber Cable Division (Japan), OFS Fitel, LLC (OFS), and Furukawa Electric LatAm S.A. (FEL). Each unit has capitalized on its unique strengths in their regions. The information and communications market is growing, but rapid external changes have diversified challenges for society and our customers, requiring us to strengthen our ability to adapt to the business environment.
Furukawa Electric is integrating its three optical fiber cable units under one holding company to leverage its global strengths. By operating under a unified strategy, the company aims to enhance efficiency and increase profitability. This integration will improve the synergy and collaboration of our various global technologies and businesses to better address the needs of customers and markets, which are becoming more complex. We will do this with agility and a customized, innovative portfolio for each region of the world.

Foad Shaikhzadeh will serve as Chairman and CEO, while Holly Hulse will take the role of President and COO. The organization will include four regional divisions: Asia Pacific, North America, LatAm/Europe/Middle East/Africa, and Specialty Photonics. For this initiative, Furukawa Electric will establish a holding company to oversee the current businesses of OFS and FEL, along with their numerous subsidiaries, as well as the optical fiber cable business unit of Furukawa Electric itself in Japan.
Lightera will further strengthen the development of high-performance optical fibers and connectivity solutions, driving global market innovation. We will leverage the technical expertise and know-how cultivated in each region to establish a new management system that enables rapid decision-making under a unified strategy. Additionally, while expanding our presence in rapidly growing markets such as generative AI, data centers, and 5G/6G, we will actively work on developing markets in utilities, medical, aerospace and defense, and sensing. Through these initiatives, we aim to achieve Furukawa’s Vision 2030 and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society, while actively addressing social issues such as expanding information infrastructure and improving energy efficiency.
